Details

Aspen Art Museum is pleased to welcome artist Lyle Ashton Harris for a dialogue that examines his photographic and archival practices as a means of establishing a relationship between oneself and the world. For over four decades, Harris has developed an expansive body of work that often feeds back into itself to create new forms. Images of friends, lovers, muses and influences recur and mingle with objects and ephemera gathered by the artist over time across widespread global locales. These are juxtaposed in site-specific collages and unique assemblages, such as his Shadow Works series. Through his engagement with the complexities of race, gender, sexuality and belonging, Harris’s practice merges scenes of intimate vulnerability with transglobal cultural narratives.

In conversation with Aspen Art Museum’s Chief Curator, Daniel Merritt, Harris will reflect upon the foundations of his influential practice and the ways in which acts of returning and reimagining can invite a more promising future.

Harris’s exhibition, Shadow Works, is on view at Aspen’s Baldwin Gallery until February 9th.
